I started teaching writing in the mid 1970s at the Boston Center for Adult Education, the oldest nonprofit adult education center in New England. Since then I have led workshops and seminars in continuing education programs at the Smithsonian Institution, UC Berkeley, Media Alliance, California State Universities and at my own day-long intensives on Martha's Vineyard and elsewhere. I'm also a former teacher/consultant for the Bay Area Writing Project at UC Berkeley School of Education. My book, Travel Writing for Profit and Pleasure, evolved from those years of teaching.
I can sum up 78 pages of the gurus of grammar, Struck and White, in nine words: Omit needless words, omit needless words, omit needless words. And I just found six more words I could cut from that, to boot.
