I started teaching writing in the mid 1970s at the Boston Center for Adult Education, the oldest nonprofit adult education center in New England. Since then I have led workshops and seminars in continuing education programs at the Smithsonian Institution, UC Berkeley, Media Alliance, California State Universities and at my own day-long intensives on Martha's Vineyard and elsewhere. I'm also a former teacher/consultant for the Bay Area Writing Project at UC Berkeley School of Education. My book, “Travel Writing for Profit and Pleasure,” evolved from those years of teaching.

“I can sum up 78 pages of the gurus of grammar, Struck and White, in nine words: ‘Omit needless words, omit needless words, omit needless words.’ And I just found six more words I could cut from that, to boot.”
